As many gamers out there the very idea of my lifestyle becoming an art form sends chills down my spine. Having my medium and one day craft become something importance to the world, it also gives me hope that not only is technology evolving, Art is evolving too. Sure reminiscing at Leonardo's Mona Lisa or Michelangelo's Cathedral will be timeless in there own right, but they are also missing what is important. The concept of Evolution.
People out there believe the greatest artists are dead. We will never see "great art" as that again. It's not that we wont see great art again its just the great art is being made my younger generations. They have moved on to expressing emotion through new mediums. It started with the television and movies, and now has turned into the invention of Video Game.
This is where i think most people have a problem with it. Is the Idea of "working for art". Yes you cannot just waltz in for five minutes and look at a pretty scenery in Crysis and say "oooo, ain't that pretty" Video Games as art need to be experienced. They need to tell you the story in a way like no other. Most accomplish this task very well. Others, well to be nice i will say that they just hit a few stepping stones along the way that can ruin that experience.
The other problem with Video Games as Art, is rather the generational gap in technology. Older Generations(such as parents and/or grandparents) may be technologically inept to understand the medium. They may understand pong but all the buttons to a MMORPG will definitely be way past them. The best approach to making video games art, would be to keep on keeping on and showing the world what we as gamers can do to express emotion.
