Inner Working Philosophy: Hate

Most of us look at this concept in a single way, if you hate something or someone, its the same feeling as you never want to see it again. This is fairly strange to me and i personally have had instances where people hate me. Especially in relationships its like a death sentence for Love.

So why do these four little letters have so much meaning to them. I think in this case it probably has more to do with history of the word that the actual word itself. We hear constantly the idea of a Hate speech or a Hate crime. Which relates generally to race or religion, and in some cases culture. I myself have had quite a bit hate for my culture as a gamer. I think Hate really comes from cultural ideology's themselves. One race or culture thinking they are better than another because of what we are taught through our parents or through our teachers.

One i can think of off the top of my head is the hatred towards Canada. I will never understand this one and have no idea where it originated. Maybe from South Park or jealousy for the free med care, it doesn't really matter to much but i still overall have hope that as new generations proceed tolerance would be more dominate than hate.

However there are other factors such as genetics that take place and grudges between people. Hate is a wonderful story telling mechanism as well, and its time to look into the concept of Hate in this weeks three games that demonstrate Hate the best.

Jedi Knight Series:
Kyle Katarn through the entire series is in a constant battle with the dark side. He is a rogue among Jedi and can use powers from both sides of the force. The hatred is the main determining factor in Star Wars lore that if you cant let go of it, it will consume you. Kyle continually struggles with this, and it ultimately ends up with the player having to decide Kyles fate. However the Series does continue with the assumption you chose the good ending in each game.

Bioshock:

Bioshocks story follows a man who has such a disdain hate for the world he created an underwater city for himself and the fellow people who cant stand the world of the Capitalists and Communists. This overall lends the residents to fall into turmoil as civil wars break out through the city.

Alpha Protocol:

I will have a full Alpha Protocol review soon, but this game give you the option of being hated by everyone and it really gives plenty of depth to the story as the experience itself will change depending on how hated you are.
